Turning the Page On Audiobooks
Barnes & Noble Premium Members,
Put the books down and listen up! I am excited to announce that I am officially an audiobook believer. My life has rapidly changed for the better ever since I got a library card.
Two pieces of background information you need to know about me. 1) I will believe something silly until proven wrong, and even then I might argue with a wall about it. 2) I grew up reading furiously (and fell off drastically in college) and was conditioned to believe that reading a book was an accomplishment.
So logically, when I realized 4 years ago my ADHD had drastically impacted my ability to retain and comprehend the content I was reading, finishing books felt like a larger challenge than ever. That feeling of reading 500+ pages bound together behind a beautifully illustrated cover became even more important to me.
Fast forward to earlier this year and I was ready to fight to the death behind the belief that audiobooks were for the weak of spirit and did not count as reading (this belief was obviously not inclusive of disabled folx (and wrong)).
So I do what I do best, and I started arguing with my beloved boyfriend about it. I was so committed to my silly argument I posted a poll on my Instagram to see what the people thought. Reader, I was wrong, but that’s not the point.
The point is, I decided to listen to audiobooks for the first time. I’ve found that (for me) I now have access to a trove of books that are WAYYYY too boring for me (Read: people with ADHD) to read.
Since then, I’ve been really reading books some of y’all would never dare to read. I’ve listened to RuPaul’s newest book, had personal breakthroughs from a YouTuber’s memoir (more on this one soon), and listened to countless hours of smut (The Acotar and Empyrean Series).
Reader, should I start a book club?
